By Emily O’Connell A ROAD block, which is in the way of a Russian businessman’s plan to expand his Yaldhurst sporting facility, might be cleared today. Canterbury Sports Ltd director Slava Meyn, who moved to Christchurch in 2009, built the Yaldhurst Football Academy two years ago. He is now in the process of planning a bigger complex on the 20ha block of land, which would include a gymnastics indoor stadium, swimming pool, sport courts, and weights area. But the land he wants to develop is zoned Open Space Community Park under the district plan, which does not allow for buildings larger than 1000 sq m. Mr Meyn wants the zoning to be changed to Open Space Metropolitan Facilities Zone, so he can progress the development as planned. •Turn to page 6

YOUNG MEN, cars, speed and alcohol are unfortunately a perfect mix for tragedy. It was like that decades ago, and it still remains today and will no doubt into the future. Next week, two people affected by drink driving and crashes will talk to students at Christchurch Boys’ High School. One is a young guy who was the passenger in a car driven by a drink driver that crashed – and one a dad who lost his son to drink driving (see page 5). How students digest the talk will inevitably be up to them. Hopefully, when they are out at the weekend, they’ll remember the talk and not get into a car driven by a mate who has been drinking, or get behind the wheel themselves after having a few. – Barry Clarke

Red zone trail opening celebration Organised by the Avon-Otakaro Network, Meet in the Middle will see groups meet at either the New Brighton Clock Tower or on the northern bank of the Avon, opposite the Margaret Mahy Family Playground, at 10.30am. Both groups will then walk or cycle to meet at Kerrs Reach at noon for the free event, which will have live music, food, information stalls and a regatta. New Zealand soul singer Hollie Smith will headline the live music. Folk band The Eastern’s Adam McGrath will also play. Canterbury and Union Rowing Clubs, Arawa Canoe Club, Aoraki Dragons and Te Waka Pounamu crews will all compete in the regatta. The Meet in the Middle event will be held at Kerrs Reach to mark the partial completion of Te Ara Otakaro, a city to sea transitional trail running alongside the Avon River. When complete, the 12km long trail will run from Barbadoes St to Pages Rd, and will be accessible for cyclists, walkers, joggers and wheelchairs.

SCHOOL SPEED CHANGES Cars may have to slow down near Aidanfield Christian School. At its meeting tonight, the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board will discuss a new variable speed limit of 40km/h on Aidanfield Drive outside the school. City council staff recommend approving the speed change, which would cost $32,000. WORKING GROUP A working group looking at the layout and future development of Scott Park in Mt Pleasant will meet tomorrow. The group was set up after Coastal Pathway Group chairman Scott Babington last month raised concerns about public access to the Scott Park foreshore near the Ferrymead Bridge. Mr Babington said the meeting would be a chance to start developing an overall masterplan for park users. DOG PARK The Ferrymead site that was once home to the failed Christchurch Maori Village could be turned into a dog park. The Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board has asked city council staff to prepare a report on whether the site could be used as a dog exercise area.

Memories shared as quarry building reopens By Emily O’Connell THE WITHERS’ family celebrated with a crowd of about 30 people as the Singlemen’s Quarters in Halswell Quarry Park reopened on Wednesday. The building, which has been closed since the February 22, 2011, earthquake, spent a year under repair. The historic building dates back to 1922. Former city councillor Norm Withers and his family are descendants of one of the original tenants of the quarters. Mr Withers said he really enjoyed the whole day. He said being there brought back a lot of memories from his childhood, like him flying kites with his uncles. He believed all their loved ones would have been proudly looking down on them, he said. City councillor Anne Galloway said with the growing number of people in Halswell, the building continued to be an important

If I was to interview everyone on the list, I would have been dead for 20 years,” he said. Mr Wilson, who now resides in Arthur’s Pass, was working for the city council heritage team in the 1990s when he was approached by the association to write a book about the suburb. Mr Wilson, who has a PhD in history from Harvard University, said it was great the book was being designed and printed in Christchurch. The book titled Local Lives: A History of Addington was due to be released on November 15, but has now been postponed until May. It is being produced by the Addington Neighbourhood Association and historian John Wilson. Association treasurer Graham Robinson said the funding it thought it would get was not available until next year, but the book can be preordered. “It will still be coming out but because of a funding issue we need to delay the printing,” he said. News Crash victim tells sobering story Local News Now

By Julia Evans CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High School students are about to get a sobering lesson. George Cairney’s life was completely changed in 2008 when he sat in the passenger’s seat of a car beside a driver who had been drinking. The car crashed into a brick wall at George 135km/h. Cairney He will talk about the incident to students at the CBHS hall on October 18 from 7pm. At the time Mr Cairney, 24, was Graham 17 and attended Clarke King’s College in Auckland. Taking most of the impact of the crash, he has since been legally blind and has lost his sense of taste, Nic Hill hearing and smell, as well as developing diabetes, epilepsy and premature ageing.

Headmaster Nic Hill has invited students from all schools around the city and the wider community to hear the story of “sadness, recovery, love and strength”. Mr Hill said the school is encouraging students to have emotional conversations about alcohol and driving. “These are conversations that we as adults have to be starting . . . there is a parental role in making sure our boys are equipped to be safe,” he said.

News New animal bylaw not likely

Bid to overcome zoning snag

COMPLAINTS ABOUT a noisy pig in Linwood made it all the way to the LinwoodCentral-Heathcote Community Board table. However, city council staff have recommended the board should not investigate the possibility of introducing a city wide bylaw to regulate farm animals in residential areas. The pig was moved out of the area before the meeting – but the board asked city council staff for advice on the “keeping of farm animals in urban areas” anyway. In their response, staff said the keeping of animals is not regulated through a bylaw or in the District Plan and they did not recommend bringing one in. “A new bylaw could help improve clarity around what is considered acceptable behaviour around the keeping of livestock but it would not enable or offer advantages in terms of enforcement options,’’ a memo said. Staff said a better alternative would be “a policy or other educational tools” to provide direction about appropriate behaviour without the same cost to the city council.

City council staff have been looking into how it could change the zoning to allow the expansion to go ahead. They decided the best way to do so was through the Greater Christchurch Regeneration Act. Today, the city council’s regulatory performance committee will decide whether to ask staff to investigate a way of doing so through the Act, and to report back to city councillors. It would require working with Regenerate Christchurch and the department of prime minister and Cabinet. It comes just as McDonald’s has applied for resource consent to the city council to build a new restaurant and drive through opposite the sporting facility. The idea to speed up the zone-changing process has been supported by Sport Canterbury, Christchurch Netball Centre, Canterbury Basketball Association, Mainland Football, Canterbury Water Polo, Southern Districts Football Club, ChristchurchNZ, and Apollo

Wigram MP Megan Woods and Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend have also written in support of using the act to do so. Dr Woods said it has the potential to be a really good asset for western Christchurch but the

community must be involved. “I think what we absolutely have to do is make sure that we get the views of the community in the process as well,” she said. The existing football facility has two full size artificial football pitches, four artificial mini-pitches, a full-size natural turf pitch, clubroom facilities, café, administrative offices, grandstand seating for about 1000 people.

Historic Team NZ shirt up for grabs By Sophie Cornish AN ORIGINAL Team New Zealand shirt from the historic 1995 America’s Cup win is up for auction to raise money for the rebuild of Pleasant Point Yacht Club. It is one of 1000 limited edition shirts with a certificate of authenticity signed by Sir Peter Blake and Sir Russell Coutts who headed the 1995 campaign. The auction is one of many items on the website GalaBid, raising money for the rebuild of Pleasant Point Yacht Club’s clubrooms in South New Brighton Park. The club lost all it’s facilities in the earthquakes. The auction is now under way until noon on Saturday. Team New Zealand will be hosted by the yacht club at an event on Saturday, where the auctioning of GalaBid items will continue. Halswell men recognised at apprenticeship awards TWO HALSWELL men have been recognised at the Apprenticeship Training Trust graduation and awards. ATT was established in 1991 to provide trade training opportunities for New Zealanders. Its purpose is to deliver a regular stream of quality tradespeople to the construction industry. Nimo Vili graduated as a plumber gasfitter. Mr Vili is a father and has been supporting his family whilst undertaking his apprenticeship. Last year, he won the Plumbing World Prize for Excellence in

Plumbing and Gasfitting. Mr Vili said he was both proud and relieved to have graduated. He said it was nice to not be on apprentice wages anymore. Shaun McCoskery is an apprentice in training. Fires, rescue, man impaled with bike handle - just another week By Mark Thomas - Specialist fire investigator A RECENT call to Hei Hei presented a bit of a challenge for the Sockburn crew. A child in a wheelchair was stuck in her bedroom because the door handle had broken. She had been there for some hours before the family admitted defeat in their endeavours to

make entry. The fire crew called managed to get one of their number through a window into the room with some small tools that were sufficient to break out. Family reunited. Water reported flowing from a house in Stanmore Rd turned out to be the downfall for some indoor gardeners.

Helpful firefighters looking inside were worried that the chemicals visible were part of a methamphetamine lab. They weren’t, but several rooms full of spiky leafed illegal plants were found by the police experts called in. A resident of Aranui was recently taken to hospital with burns to the hand.

You guessed it! Stovetop fire. Every week the same! Spreydon’s fire crew had the unpleasant job of removing a bicycle brake handle from a bike last Tuesday. That bit sounds easy. But the handle was impaled through the rider’s hand at the time.

The delicate use of a serious pair of bolt cutters allowed the patient to be taken to hospital for expert surgery to remove the handle from hand. Finally, someone in Aranui was cold on Wednesday night. They opened the boarded up fireplace and lit a fire. It was boarded for a reason. No flue, no chimney!

Ruthlessness recognised By Andrew King CASHMERE HIGH footballer Eddie Wilkinson is known as a gentleman off the pitch and a ruthless competitor on it. His fierceness on the field has seen him named in the national under-19 team to travel to the United States in April. “I play my best out there. There are no friends on the field,” he said. Cashmere coach Craig Squire said he is a very talented player and an absolute gentleman off the pitch. “He is one of the most polite, respectful people I have had the pleasure of teaching in the past 15 years,” he said. “He will do great things in the sport.” The 17-year-old had a great season for Cashmere High’s first XI, which placed 14th at the national tournament in Napier last month. Wilkinson was named Cashmere’s most valuable player for the tournament. He also played for FCTwenty11 this year after competing for Halswell United since age 9. HILLMORTON High’s basketball team were a minute away from winning their first national title. After cruising through pool play and the semis undefeated, the boys team, which came last at the 2016 Schick championships secondary schools nationals, narrowly lost to Taranaki’s Stratford High 7772 in the final on Thursday. Canterbury Ram’s co-captain and coach Marques Whippy said the team was down by 35 heading into the final quarter but came roaring back to lose by only five. “Another minute, we would have won,” he said. “[We] took a couple of quarters to settle before coming right.” The side competed in the ‘A’ grade, a level below the top ‘AA’ grade played at nationals.

Ihaia Kendrew top-scored for his team in the final with 30 points. Kendrew and teammate Joshua Nickel were named in the tournament side. Hillmorton beat Oamaru’s St Kevin’s College 76-51, Otaki College 123-89, Catholic Cathedral College 96-60 and Te Aroha College 83-65 in pool play at the Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North. They faced Hamilton’s Nga Taiatea Wharekura in the semifinal and beat them 74-62. Hillmorton only lost three games during the season. They also took out the schools competition and the South Island tournament. Whippy said he was really proud of the team and what they achieved. Hillmorton’s girls side came eighth in the ‘A’ competition.

Marinade 2 Tbsp Lemon juice ¼ cup Canola oil ¼ cup Soy sauce 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp Curry powder 2 cloves Garlic, crushed 1 pinch Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions Place whole tangelos in a large pot and cover with plenty of cold water. Boil for two hours, drain and allow to cool. Heat the oven to 180 deg C. Grease and line a 21cm round spring form cake tin. Cut tangelos in half and remove any pips. Place fruit (skin, pith, flesh and all) in a food processor and blitz until smooth.

Directions Add all other ingredients and blitz until smooth and well combined. Pour into prepared cake tin and bake for one hour or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Cover cake with tin foil half way

Not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPR. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does

not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. New Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. Fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.
